Sustainable Energy in School- Geothermal Energy

by Jeonghyun Lee | 29-01-2015 09:56

Last semester, my friends and I did some research on renewable energy development within our school building. Surprisingly, our school had been using various methods of sustainable development including solar hear, solar ray, and geothermal energy. I would like to talk further on geothermal energy.

First of all, we were all surprised by the fact that geothermal generators were located just under the school facility. Not only was geothermal energy production rare compared to other forms of renewable energy development, but was also comparably expensive. Luckily, we had the chance to actually see the process and do some research on it.

One of the most interesting things was the fact that geothermal power generation is relatively easy than we actually think. When we think of geothermal generation, we imagine heat and steam rising from the ground. Yet that is just one type of the production methods. Other commercial methods relied on the ?difference? of ground temperature instead of the heat itself to generate electricity.

The other interesting thing was the fact that geothermal energy development was generally used to heat and cool our school facilities. The generators were connected to the AC system, and the electricity produced was directly used by the air conditioners and heaters. I thought that this was a very clever and effective way of using renewable energy, since most of the electricity we use indoors is used to maintain temperatures.
