Organic Farming | Pride of Sikkim

At the outset, wishing you all a very happy and a prosperous new year 2015! This 2015 is an important year for India's one of the nature's blessed state: Sikkim! It is indeed going to be the first state in India revolutionizing the practice of organic farming, with 100 per cent effectiveness!

Organic farming is a wonderful application in agricultural field.  Sikkim, one of the northeastern states of India, holds the distinction and renowned for its productivity in organic goods. Sikkim is an organic agricultural state which believe and is about to become India?s first organic agricultural state. Organic farming in Sikkim has been carried out since a long time. It is the essence of the people of Sikkim of which they are proud of. Now, what is organic farming? Why it is given much importance to this form of agricultural practice? In simple words, it is eco-friendly! It is practiced in such a way, that the crops are produced in best possible ?pure? form, that the soil remains intact without losing its productivity ability in the long run, and uses organic substances for goods produce, like animal and farm wastes, other biological materials and ubiquitous microbes etc. This method excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, chemical fertilizers, growth regulators, pesticides etc. during crop practice. Ultimately, sustainability in productivity, protection of environment, with creating agricultural products, is the all-round aim of organic farming in Sikkim, as well in most of the other states. How this method of organic farming is being executed? Basically, the major factors on farming are crop rotation, maintenance and enhancement of soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation, addition of organic manure and use of microbes, crop residues, bio-pesticides, biogas slurry, waste etc. One of the major components in organic farming is vermiculture, which is effective in heightening the fertility of soil and produces goods in large quantity in a significant sustainable way.  The method of organic farming is very sustainable in nature. It enhances the agricultural ecosystem. Its characteristics features includes: relying chiefly on local, indigenous and renewable resources efficient use of solar energy keeps the fertility of soil well-maintained has the ability to maximize and recycling of plant nutrients and other organic matters properly maintain diversity in the system of production affairs in the agricultural landscape and gives animals all the support to maintain natural balance and behavior. With increase in organic farming practices in eastern India, it is significantly contributing to poverty alleviation and food security: by increasing the yields of productivity, maintain and conserving bio-diversity and other natural resources on the farmland increasing household income and income-generation introduction of varied safe food etc.
