As a Head of the Events Committee of my school's Eco-Council, I, along with other members, organized Friday movie night. Many of you may ask, "What is Friday movie night? And how does featuring movie night help achieve Eco-Council Events Committee's aim to spread environmental awareness within the school community?" Well, let me explain. Friday movie night is held on Friday after school for approximately two hours. We invite high school and middle school students to participate in this event. During this event, we show an environmental documentary or a movie. Last year, we showed Wall-E, Disney's movie that portrays the theme of overwhelming amount of waste produced by humans and its effect on the nature and the society. This year, however, we decided to show a documentary, which shows a more realistic depiction of environmental issue prevalent in our world. This year we showed Trashed, starred by Jeremy Irons. In this documentary, Jeremy Irons travels around the world to tackle and cover waste problems and shows places affected by pollution.

Here are some notes that I took while watching this video. Please take a look!

1. Humans produce waste that nature cannot digest, one of which is plastic. Plastic takes many forms, such as yoghurt and milk containers and plastic bags. > A single, large plastic bag gets fragmented into pieces of plastic bag, which are usually thrown away in water resources, such as ocean and river. > This poses a huge ecological threat as they can attract chemicals. > This in turn becomes more dangerous to marine life as sea organisms may consume or intake the chemicals. > The chemicals can get transferred to humans as humans also consume seafood that are exposed to harmful chemicals.  > CYCLE

2. Approximately 800,000 jobs are created for only 33% of recycling the waste produced. > Economically beneficial and environmentally friendly!

3. Incinerator: Apparatus or equipment that converts or burns waste into energy, such as heat. a Aim & Role: Environmentally friendly

Drawback: Releases dioxins (chemical) a harmful to human's health

There are, of course, more areas of environmental issues covered. My notes only cover some of the parts that the documentary features.
