Personal Hygiene and Basic Environmental Issues

The Burmese SEAYLP and SUSI 2011 alumni members joined the project team and collaborated in designing the Environ-educational Outreach Project which focus on teaching the primary and secondary students from the Aung Parahita Monastic Education Center located at Hlaing Tar Yar Tsp, Yangon, Myanmar.

The school has over 1, 100 students and the three months bi-weekly teaching project focused on the understanding and practicing of personal hygiene and basic environmental issues, awareness, and self-start practices. All alumni members took the responsibility of designing the suitable environmental teaching curriculum which can be understood and practiced by the students and training the volunteers via workshops and readings.

The curriculum started with the Principles of ecology, Principles of sustainability, Principles of community: The Basic Fact of Life (www.psychology.org.au) which focus on the understanding of the environment, the world we live together. The children came from rural and low-class background, the volunteers sacrificed lot of their efforts and volunteerism in teaching to make sure that students can understand and participate. The first lesson ended with the drawing game about the students' imaginary future which they made beautiful photos with mountains, trees, streams, rivers and animals in the way they see what their green future is.

The second lesson focus on the classrooms and the school environment and the waste. In this lesson, students learned about why the bins around their classrooms are categorized as easy-biodegradable and plastic waste.  It also includes the introduction of the Trash Cycle (what happened after we consumed) and the introduction of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The third lesson is what are reusable around their environment, what are easily biodegradable and what are not. Then, they are examined about how much they know more about the green future with another drawing game, focusing on habits on nature this time.
