Bhaktapur district is the neighboring district of the populated capital city Kathmandu. Kathmandu, which has seen rapid population growth in last ten years, is overly populated and it is hard to find any open spaces. So people are now opting to settle in the neighboring district which includes Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. Here I will be sharing some my thoughts and views about the population growth and its effect on Bhaktapur district. With no proper law regarding urbanization and settlement, it will take no time to convert open and clean Bhaktapur city into polluted and conjusted place. Bhaktapur being home to national heritages and ancient temples and sculptures can be at danger due to the polluted environment created by the growing environment. These heritages must be kept well away from human settlement so that it is not polluted and exploited. Another concern regarding urbanization is the decrease in the farming land and agricultural production. Bhaktapur district until now boosts the production of vegetables required for capital city. The district's most area is covered with farming land and the rich soil here has enabled to have high and quality production. But with rapid urbanization the fertile land here is in danger. The environmental resources here too look in danger. Like the condition of Bagmati in Kathmandu, rivers in the Bhaktapur may have the same fate in the near future. the forest are in jeopardy as they are now slowly being cleared for settlement and agriculture .As a result the water resources are slowly drying up. Due to plotting and housings in the sloppy areas, it has invited to the natural disaster and disasters like landslide may cause damage to human settlement. So the government as well as the public should think wisely and in a sustainable manner so that the resources of Bhaktapur have wise use. It is high time for the government to bring strict laws and plan in order manage the settlement in cities including Bhaktapur. |
