TIME AND AGAIN, IT'S ABOUT DRAINAGESby | 19-11-2014 14:11 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When I say poor or lack of drainages is one of the biggest environmental challenges we have, at least, in South East Nigeria, I mean every word of it. And the raining seasons are not usually good times for those that live in such environment(one without proper drainage channel). This time, it wasn't different. In fact, it can pass for one of the most ugly evidence of the effects of poor drainages. Now, there's this road that leads to my university, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka the road is one with drainage at both sides but as I once reported here, the drainage has been completely filled with sand and other organic/inorganic wastes making it difficult, if not impossible, for flood or any other water to be channeled properly. The part of the drainage completely filled with sand and other kinds of matter starts from a location about one kilometer down to our school gate. Because the drainage cannot serve it's purpose of channeling water again, all the flood/other waters flow along the asphalted road which led to the quickened breakdown of that part of the road. It became a site for stagnant flood water and also spelled danger for drivers as commercial buses were often stuck in that part of the road. It worried the university students also as sometimes the stagnant pool of flood water is splashed on them by drivers who were trying to navigate their way through. It also caused them delays in their schedule as that part of the road became a location for light traffic jam. I thought of what to do to salvage the situation and I,first, pleaded with the state government through my university radio station,UNIZIK 94.1 FM, to immediately come to the aid of the residents of that area especially the students by at least patching up the road. Some of my fellow presenters in our university radio joined in making that plea to the government and the state government responded by temporarily patching up the road. Some wondered why they should just do a patch up then but now, it appears they did it in order to wait for the dry season to commence the real work there. And, the good news is that they indeed were waiting for the dry season which has slowly set in to commence full work there. They are now clearing the drainages of sand and other materials that had filled it up while also filling the affected parts of the road with big chippings as a temporary measure pending when the entire road will be fully reconstructed. It was all the more pleasing for me that the workers just don't evacuate sand materials from the drainage but also dispose the evacuated sand properly by conveying it via a number of tippers. It has now made the road clearer and water wastes now take its place in the drainage channels. Seeing that environment return slowly to a friendly one gives me huge joy.
