Gen Y Campus Journalism Workshop

by Bam Azores | 16-11-2014 20:09

Last Saturday, November 15, 2014 we had a Campus Journalism Workshop for youth in our City. It was organized by FSLF and the Gen Y group. What is Gen Y? That?s the media group of the FSLF.  We got a fund grant from a company in the US to start a cable tv show for and by the youth about the environment.

There will be special segments during the one half hour show that will broadcast twice a month. The segments are the following:

o   Environation will focus on tackling environmental issues, concerns and projects by the youth from different schools and organizations.

o   Trip Ko ?To is a travel segment that will showcase famous and unknown tourist spots, food, arts, fashion, events and other activities that matters to the Gen Y generation.

o   iMove is about environmental projects that the youth are doing. It can start from plans all the way to implementing the projects until they have an impact on the environment.

o   Mojo (Mobile Journalism) is about how to make our own news and feature videos using our simple mobile phones.

So last Saturday, about 40 high school and college students gathered at the Tahanan ni Na Meding and spent the morning listening to speakers.  Our first speaker was Mr. Nani Cortez who is the President of the San Pablo City Press Corps. He taught us about Basic Writing for news. The second speaker was Keno Moreno who is the FSLF PRO and he talked about Gen Y and MoJo. The last speaker, Marielle Tolosa, talked about Marketing because that is her line of work. We learned a lot from them.

In the afternoon, they conducted the screening and auditions for the hosts of the show and the different segments.  It was fun to watch the auditions and we were guessing would make it for the different host positions they would need for the show.

While they were computing the scores of those who auditioned, two of the production crew who are Mass Communication students in one of the universities, interviewed me about my Water Quality Monitoring Projects.  I told them about my simple techniques and also told them about the more complicated water monitoring that I have seen being done by my university in one of the lakes using techonology like probes and solar panels and aerators.

The Gen Y show will be on maybe in the first quarter of next year.
