![]() ![]() ![]() From October 2 to November 8, 2014 a group called Climate Walkers trekked from Kilometer Zero in Manila to Ground Zero in Tacloban. They walked exactly 1,000 kilometers in solidarity with the 400,000 people that walked in New York on September 23 and with the other people in 150 other countries. They walked to demand action from global leaders who were gathered in the UN Climate Summit in New York. So in the Philippines, the group headed by Climate Change Commissioner Naderev Sano walked by foot from town to town and city to city. In each place they would spend the night and share their thoughts on Climate Change with the people in where they stayed the night. The walk was long and tiring. They stopped by our city on the night of Day 4. We held a program in the parking area of the big Mall and several speakers shared their thoughts about what we can do to mitigate the effects of Climate Change. I happened to get a sprain the morning that they came so I was on crutches. That?s kind of ironic since I really wanted to join the walk on Day 5 to bring them to the next town. But the organizers encouraged me and said that the crutches didn?t have to stop me from joining the walk. That?s why you see me in some pictures below walking with my crutches. I even got to say a few things in a short interview.
Anyway, the important thing is that the Climate Walkers made it safely to Ground Zero on November 8, which is the first anniversary of the time when Super Typhoon Haiyan hit land in the Philippines last year. This brought back memories and also reminded the people of the plight of those who lost their homes and businesses and even the thousands who lost their lives in the height of the typhoon. The Climate Walk for Justice motivated the grassroots communities to be part of the action towards environment protection. We are glad to be part of this advocacy. |
