UAE helps make clean energy switch easier

by Arushi Madan | 15-11-2014 22:26

UAE is not only putting in all systems , regulations , projects and faculities to make UAE clean and green but is also going an extra mile by supporting developing nations in clean energy projects by funding them or by concessional loans.

Six clean energy projects funded by the UAE are already helping more than 300,000 people in six developing nations. Some communities will get access to electricity for the first time, which in turn will give them access to clean drinking water from desalination plants powered by renewable energy. Some other projects funded by UAE are :

-A wind energy project in a coastal area in Mauritania will help produce ice blocks, enabling fishermen to store their catch to earn a better income. The $10 million (Dh36.72 million) wind energy project generating 15MW will also power the coastal community's schools, health centres and desalination plants meant to provide clean drinking water.

A $6 million waste-to-energy project in Maldives to generate 2MW of energy will act as a model solution to the problem of waste disposal on small islands. It will also provide significant health and tourism benefits for over 120,000 people.

A $14 million biomass gasification and biodiesel plants to be set up on two islands in Samoa will generate 3MW of power and four million litres of biodiesel per annum. This will help replace expensive imported fuel for transportation.

Now , UAE has decided to ease its loan terms for renewable energy projects in developing countries  which will help many rural communities across the globe get easier access to energy solutions and take up anti-deforestation projects. UAE's  Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) will be offering more attractive terms for loans .

The easier loan terms will help the Irena/ADFD projects support a wider range of countries and renewable energy projects. This will allow countries facing international borrowing constraints to access financing for their clean energy projects. The new terms will also help expedite the process of finalising the loan agreement and project implementation.

Since the announcement, Irena is already seeing a significant increase in interest by developing countries to apply for this fund as the new terms are far more attractive.

UAE has proved that it's a responsible nation and aims for Clean Green World not only Clean Green UAE.
