by | 04-11-2014 23:17

To extensively heighten the awareness of youth of their significant contribution through inspiring them to be responsive to the needs of the society emphasizing on its significance to national progress in the context of sustainable development and access to better education, Industrial Engineering Council?s Project NOWTBUKS, headed by yours truly, conducted another Project NOWTBUKS Activity at one of the devastated school of Typhoon Saiyan – Danao Elementary School.

The program started with

Introductory Activity: Games & Lecture

The IE Council, together with partner youth organizations and other collaborators and with the permission of the administrator/s of beneficiary schools or foundations, conducts a fun-filled learning experience like teambuilding or getting-to-know-you games to invigorate the interest of kids toward environmental preservation. One youth leader will then open the minds of the kids toward the importance of upkeeping their surroundings ensuring a clean and green environment.

Followed by

Main Activity: Making Notebooks from Used Paper

IE Council prepares raw materials such as used paper, yarn and stick for the making of eco-friendly notebooks from used paper.  Each ?ate? (older sister) and ?kuya? (older brother) is assigned to a particular kid or group of kids whereby s/he is going to teach the kids how to easy to make a notebook from recycled paper. The ate and kuya will also enrich their learning session by educating them how their families can save money from recycling paper to make notebooks.  Moreover, kids are encouraged to invite their friends to make eco-notebooks as well.

Closing Activity: Covenant Signing

After being immersed in understanding their simple yet significant role in contributing to a better world thru recycling, the kids are asked to write on a paper what they can do next after the event.  They are made to write in English or in vernacular to help them freely express their learning and promises for a greener environment.

The program ended with IE students donating writing tables to the school since almost all of the school equipment were destroyed during the course of the strongest typhoon in the history.

The inspiring story of the children who survived the wrath of the nature gave me more reason to continue creating an impact to the community through environmental education.
