![]() ![]() ![]() Lagos state is the commercial hub center of Nigeria. It is located in the South Western region of the country and has an estimated population of 21million persons. Lagos is known for it's unchanging huge traffic and the consequent alarming noise. Owing to the huge vehicular traffic in Lagos, the state is indeed a noisy one. Noise which majorly emanates from the car horns. It has become unbearable to say the least and in the light of that, the Lagos state government in September 2014 declared October 15 as a "Horn Free" day in Lagos to help reduce noise pollution in the state. The day was meant to be one in which drivers will reduce to the most possible minimum, their use of horns. The governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola, during his speech before the day made it clear that their action was the wish of Lagos residents who have repeatedly sent messages bemoaning the heavy noise pollution in the state. He said, it is "a response to the petitions and complaints of citizens and tax payers who, on daily basis, write and petition us that somebody is preventing them from sleep either from the noise they are making or from other uncharitable activities they are carrying on without regard for the well-being of their neighbours?. The annoying part of it is that more often than not, those honking their horns have no need to do so. They just honk their horn for the sake of it and this have serious health implications. The governor cited examples with Europe where he said you can walk for 10 days on their road without hearing any horn. The Lagos horn-free day which happened on the 15th of October was voluntary and promising. It will be an annual event and with massive awareness and education, the programme in the long run will prove a huge success. At least, Lagosians now known that some hours without horn doesn't hurt. I was very impressed by this initiative as it will help reduce noise pollution in Lagos and improve the health of the Lagos residents. (Photos 2 & 3 courtesy Vanguard Photo 1 courtesy Thisday LIVE)
