Turn used cooking oil into Eco-Soaps

by | 25-09-2014 21:07

Cooking oil is widely used for cooking purposes. Options for disposing of used cooking oil are limited yet difficult because the solid waste regulations restrict the disposal of liquids in landfills. And subsequently unlawful disposal arises which includes open burning and heating process using waste cooking oil that causes black smokes, pouring down to kitchen sink or drains that can cling the insides of pipes and the sewer system and eventually lead to unsanitary conditions and damages. Considerable amount of used cooking oil then finally dispose by inappropriate channels such as drains which is seriously polluting the environment. All these has intensely disrupted the ecological environment which not only hazardous to the marine life but also leading to global warming.

Currently, there is around 220,000,000 litres of used cooking oil is being dispose into drains every year in Malaysia. Waste oils of households have been ignored by used oil collector who only source for the major grease generators such as restaurants. Pouring down the grease into the drains not only pollute the environment, but also cling the inside of the pipes and sewer system.

This social enterprise target is to collect the used cooking oil within the local community and reprocess the used cooking oil to soap. This environmental friendly soap not only save the cost but also reduce the usage of chemical soap. In addition, this project could Strengthen local communities? ability to conserve the natural waste resources into good use to reduce or diminishes the water pollution within the local community whereby waste oil will no longer dispensed into drains that can decrease the biodiversity in water hence cling the sewer system which eventually lead to unsanitary conditions.

Other than that, we also carried out soap making workshop for free or very minimum fees for the local community to spread the awareness and encourage them to recycle their own used cooking oil into soaps.
