DEAL ON ENVIRONMENT

by | 25-09-2014 17:31

Trees are the longest living organisms on the planet and one of the earth's greatest natural resources .A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year that means two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four.

Liberia, the Ebola-hit country has vowed to stop cutting down its trees completely in return for development aid from Norway. Norway will pay the impoverished West African country $150m to stop deforestation by 2020 an appealing deal on conserving the nature.Norway will work along with Liberia to preserve about 43% of the upper Guinean forest  and to cancel all its earlier logging permits.

It is believed that Liberia has turned to logging as a way of raising cash in difficult times. The current Ebola outbreak is having a significant impact on the economy and to stop all the logging in Liberia will not be easy ( illegal tree-cutting for long is a common practice in the country). But all the efforts made in the direction of conservation are wonderful and praiseworthy.

Countries having rich forests and are indulged in logging for economic gains should also exert pressure on the world body to come up with the similar plans for them too. This deal for sure will be a role model and good for others to follow on environmental issues.
