Relationship Between Conversation and Development

by Dharmendra Kapri | 04-09-2014 14:40

Development of a country requires economic growth, which in turn, requires increased production of consumer goods and agricultural products. Higher industrial and agricultural outputs, no doubt, bring prosperity, but result in environmental (air, water and land) pollution and depletion of resources. More and more forest area is being brought under industry and agriculture. This change in ecosystem upsets ecological balance, adversely affecting organisms, including man. It should be kept in mind that environment and biotic communities are interacting complementary units of an ecosystem. Hence, maintenance of environment is essential for life.

Both economic development and conservation of nature (environment and resources) are necessary for the improvement of human lot. The former improves the material aspect of human life, whereas the latter improves the material, ecological and aesthetic aspects. Another difference between the two is that the benefits of economic development accrue quickly, but those of conservation programme become evident slowly and over a long period. Conservation programme should be given more importance than economic programme in development because the former is essential for the very existence of mankind whereas the latter only improves quality of life. Ecologists and conservationists must be associated with the people who prepare plans for the development of the country's industry and agriculture.
