Eucalyptus tree destruction in the Nchiy compartment of the Oku Community Forest for water conservationby | 30-08-2014 19:12 |

Our community is best known for good cool water and fresh air. This water and fresh air is as a result of the forest. We are in one of the highest altitude communities in the region(3011m). Temperatures are generally low since it is in the high altitude. The forest is made up of many species of trees including eucalyptus trees.
Fighting climate change through tree planting in the community forest does not mean any species of tree can be found in the forest. We know that water is one of the basic commodities needed by all living things. Trees are like human beings that differ in the quantity of water they consumed per day or per hour. We discover that there water shortage in our community every month.
Eucalyptus trees under studies are said to consume a lot of water from the ground. Like in our community eucalyptus trees have a great height compared to our neighboring community that lacks water. You can see eucalyptus trees there without good green leaves and they are also very short.
We discourage the planting o f this tree in our community forest. In effect CAMGEW has destroyed more than 200 eucalyptus trees in the Nchiy compartment of the Oku community forest. You can hear of compartment because the forest is too large and divided into compartments for proper management by community members. We believe water provide life to the community members. Imagine when you lack water in the environment. Life seems difficult. We need to protect our water source which is the forest. |
