Tree planting in the Oku community forest as a means of mitigating climate changeby | 28-08-2014 00:27 |

Climate change, water shortages, deforestation and poverty are serious problems to the environment of our community. Community members turn to forest exploitation as a means for livelihood not taking into consideration the effects on the environment. Poverty and lack of jobs always push many of community members to fall trees to make a living from it.
The trees fallen have much impact on the global environment. The results of this destruction are many. There is climate change where temperatures increased rapidly, water sources destroyed, medicinal plants destroyed, some animal species lost etc. CAMGEW aimed at protecting the global environment for the benefit of the community members.
Tree planting has been looked upon as a means of solving these problems. We planted about 17000 trees of Prunus Africa in 2012 and 2013. In 2014 we planted 3000 trees of Prunus africana, Schefflera, and Carapas. These trees are native trees of our community forest, they are bee loving tree, water shade, medicinal for prostrate cancer and also for traditional medicine etc.
Oku community is best known for white honey due to the presence of the Montane forest. The honey harvested provides a means of livelihood to community members. Destroying the forest means reducing the quantity and the quality of the honey harvested. We carryout tree planting to solve this problem and also discourage the cutting down of fresh trees in the forest.
