Even as we lament on problems within our environment in South Africa, it is important for us to know more about organisations that are involved in environmental awareness, management and protection. 1. The South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) empowers young people who are neglected by South Africa's education system. Through tutoring, enrichment and support, they give impoverished learners the tools to reach their potential and uplift their communities. Their projects have been developed in response to community needs to help the next generation build academic and life skills, prepare for and succeed in higher education and employment, and contribute as leaders to South Africa's economic and social development. You can read more about them here: http://www.saep.org/ 2. WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) is a South African environmental organisation with a mission to implement high impact environmental and conservation projects which promote public participation in caring for the Earth. With a remarkable 88 year history, WESSA has a strong track record of delivering human capacity development projects by working in strategic partnerships, thus enabling people to make more sustainable lifestyle and environmental management choices. Critical focus areas include life-supporting eco-systems such as water, energy and biodiversity. You can read more about them here: http://www.wessa.org.za/ 3. The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) was established in 2002 after a process of deliberation within the research community. Its responsibilities rest on three mandates: observation, information and education on the environment in South Africa. You can read more about them here: http://www.saeon.ac.za/ 4. The Department of Environmental Affairs is mandated to ensure the protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources, balanced with sustainable development and the equitable distribution of the benefits derived from natural resources. In its quest for better use and management of the natural environment, the Department of Environmental Affairs is guided by its constitutional mandate, as contained in section 24 of the Constitution. The Department of Environmental Affairs fulfils its mandate through formulating, coordinating and monitoring the implementation of national environmental policies, programmes and legislation. You can read more about them here: https://www.environment.gov.za/aboutus/department These institutions and many more are involved actively in protecting the environment and have good educational resources on their site that can help us young people learn more about our environment.
