Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and His Views on Renewable Sources of Energy

by | 04-08-2014 01:00

On August 1st 2014, the Honorable Dr. Avul Pakhir Jalaudin Abdul Kalam, former President of India visited my school. Dr. Kalam has been the former Head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and is commonly know as the Missile Man Of India, thanks to his contribution in developing over 15 types missiles. He is a senior scientist in nuclear physics. He spoke about the importance of Nuclear energy ind India.

At my school, Dr. Kalam spoke about renewable sources of energy. Their need is being felt more than ever in today's growing world. The 21st century has given us comforts and luxuries that come at a heavy price, and this price is environmental loss. The economic value of our oceans is $30 billion but their environmental value is priceless. In a country such as India, where the population exceeds 1.2 billion, efficient use of energy is important for sustainable development.

Solar energy in India accounted for less than 1% of total energy production in 2007. By January 2014 the installed grid connected solar power had increased to 2,208.36 MW.Today, India has been ranked number one in terms of solar energy production per watt installed. India is endowed with economically exploitable and viable hydro potential assessed to be about 84,000 MW. The present installed capacity as on September 30, 2013 is approximately 39,788.40 MW which is 17.39% of total electricity generation in India.

Currently there are 20 nuclear reactors in India producing about 30000 GWh of electricity. 6 other reactors are under construction.  Nuclear power is the 4th largest source of energy in India. The Govt. of India has kept in mind the large number of problems that arise due to nuclear energy, evident form incidents such as 3/11 in Japan. The Govt. has given due consideration to the public safety while making such reactors.

All these sources of energy account for less than 50% of energy production in India. The rest 50% is produced through fossil fuel and other environmentally harmful substances. In the near future, I hope India achieves a sustainable plan for environment friendly energy production.

At the end of the program, Dr. Kalam was gifted a painting by a student. The painting depicts the home city of Dr. Kalam which is Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu State. It is one of the most environment friendly city in India.
