GREEN HOPE UAE PARTICIPATES IN DUBAI MUNICIPALITY'S "MY CITY MY ENVIRONMENT" CAMPAIGN

by | 30-07-2014 12:09

Dubai Municipality's " My City , My Environment" campaign intends to inculcate waste segregation and recycling practices amongst the residents of our city which in turn will help in developing sustainable lifestyles. Its basic objective is to encourage residents to learn to segregate recyclable waste from organic waste , thereby, easing the method of waste treatment.

Members of Green Hope UAE volunteered for this pilot project which targeted residents in the Jumeirah area of Dubai . Over a period of three days , in the hot afternoons , we went from door to door to spread the message. We were divided into groups of three and each of us carried a questionnaire and leaflets  which explained the process of segregation to the residents.

We explained what items constitute organic waste and which are the items that can be recycled. Each villa in the pilot project area had two bins one was black in colour and the other was green. Residents had to use the black bin for their organic waste , comprising mainly of food scraps . The green bin was for recyclable waste , such plastics, cardboards , paper waste etc. Dubai Municipality had different collection schedules for this waste and this was also explained to the residents.

Apart from this door to door campaign , our members also stood in a local hypermarket in Jumeirah and distributed flyers to the customers and created awareness about the same . It was, indeed, a proud moment for us when we were invited to attend  the closing ceremony of this project and commended for our efforts.  Waste recycling is a vital component of sustainable consumption and all sections of civil society must engage in upgrading our lifestyles towards this.
