Brushing Up

by | 01-06-2014 19:20

For the first time in the Colosseum?s 2,000 year history, the massive amphitheatre is set to be cleaned using an economical and surprising tool -toothbrushes.

Toothbrushes will be used to scrub at years and years worth of grime coating the magnificent architectural model?s exterior.

In addition to this, large scrubbing brushes and delicate drills like the ones used by dentists will be used to scour away at the travertine marble that is entrenched with grime and bits of calcium.

Unheated water that is free of detergents will be sprayed in a fine nozzle attached to a yellow pipe that will produce a mist softening the thick black calcium deposits and leaving only a residue of dirty water containing no chemicals.

The small bits of stones that fall off will be systematically numbered, laid out on benches and reattached with special adhesive glue made of marble dust and water.

The project sponsored by Tod?s an Italian shoe and luxury goods company, is set to be complete by October 2016 and is costing 25 million euros.

I commend the eco-friendly approach taken to renovate such an architectural marvel thus serving the twin purposes of preserving an important cultural heritage  site and serving the needs of the environment.
