Garbage Bank movement in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The existence of the garbage bank managed independently by the community in a number of areas of Yogyakarta can reduce the volume of waste dumped in landfill Piyungan Bantul every day.

"In 2009 , the average volume of waste generated to reach 320 tons per day , but this time the volume of waste generated is reduced to 180 tonnes per day , " said Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti on the sidelines of providing assistance to a number of the waste bank in Yogyakarta.

According to Haryadi , management and treatment are carried out independently by the community through a number of the garbage banks in the city of Yogyakarta is one factor reduction in waste volume quite significantly in the last four years. He hopes the community can continue to develop the waste bank on their local area, because of a well-managed trash can support the local economy .

Meanwhile, the head of the Environment Agency ( BLH ) of Yogyakarta Irfan Susilo said , the purpose of the grant is to increase the capacity and accountability of the garbage banks in order to gain the trust of the public. ?At present , the bank has the function of strategic bins to reduce waste disposed to landfill. Therefore, the presence of the garbage banks should continue to be supported so that it can flourish," he said.

In 2012 , in the city of Yogyakarta , there were 61 garbage banks and until March of this year the number has increased to 129 garbage banks, with 29 of them in the pilot stage. Hopefully, by the end of the year was able to operate optimally.
