![]() Google has dedicated the doodle for the day (27th May 2014) to Rachel Louise Carson, an American marine biologist and conservationist, oh her 107th birthday. She explored the ocean life and published her work and research in four books her national award winning bestselling trilogy (The Sea around Us, The Edge of the Sea and Under the Sea Wind) and Silent Spring. Silent Spring was noted and credited with advancing the global movement on environment. Silent Spring focuses on the impact of synthetic pesticides on the environment, with the title referring to the absence of birdsong across swathes of agricultural landscape following the widespread introduction of pesticides and other intensive farming practices.
Carson is also credited with being an inspiration for the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency, a US government agency focused on protecting human health and the environment. A worldwide ban on DDT's agricultural use was formalized under the Stockholm Convention, but its limited use in disease vector control continues to this day and remains controversial. |
