[January Free Report] Water Access in Madagascar

by Barisoa Nancy Andriamiarimbola | 15-01-2023 22:07

Every drop counts in Madagascar

Water scarcity is a major problem in Madagascar. Only about half of the Malagasy population has access to clean water. This article will open your eyes to the importance of water and teach you how to save water, before it's too late!

The southern regions of Madagascar have the country¡¯s lowest water supply coverage. Access to drinking water is a major challenge for the local population, yet it not only satisfies essential human needs but also contributes to sustainable development.

Water – Not a luxury but a necessity.

Water is essential for life. It is a sine qua non for human health and well-being and for the preservation of the environment. Agriculture, food, energy, transportation: water is at the heart of our existence. However, it is unevenly distributed.

Water Problem in Madagascar...

Families in Madagascar often resort to negative coping strategies to the detriment of their children, such as having to interrupt their children's schooling to buy water at exorbitant prices (the price of a 20-liter jerry can of water rises from 200 Ariary to 2,500 Ariary at peak times). Today, 1 euro is equivalent to 4,876.67 Malagasy Ariary. We will discover about a company in Madagascar among many others that is contributing to provide water.

National Water Project in Madagascar : $220 Million to Improve Basic Water and Sanitation Services and Supply.

The government of Madagascar and the World Bank have signed the recently approved $220 million National Water Project. The project aims to increase access to water services in the Greater Antananarivo area and some secondary towns, and to improve the performance of the water and energy company.

The project will directly provide improved water services to 625,000 people, including the most vulnerable through the social connections program, whose water costs will be reduced. Students and health centers will benefit from improved WASH services. More broadly, the entire population of Greater Antananarivo and targeted secondary cities, will benefit from more resilient water services, improved availability of services, and better protection against extreme weather events (drought or flooding).

UNICEF is also assisting the country in improving access to safe drinking water through the use of scientific methodologies and satellite images to locate water resources. Deepwater drilling is typically defined as operating in water depths of greater than 4,000 feet (1219 meters) The first UNICEF-supported deep bedrock borehole was drilled in Tsihombe District in May 2018 which provided water at a depth of 85 meters with a yield of 4 m3/h.

We have seen that the country contributes the most to the eradication of the water shortage, even disbursing a lot of money. How can you also help to preserve water?

After air, water is the most important element for the preservation of life. Water is a finite commodity that, if not managed properly, will lead to shortages in the near future. Therefore, water conservation can go a long way in alleviating these impending shortages.
But don't panic! With these simple three rules, you'll be a hero and protect our planet :

Turn off the taps
Don't let your water consumption get out of control. Save 6 liters of water per minute by turning off your tap when you brush your teeth. Also, fix leaky faucets and stop flushing 60 liters of water down the drain every week. Switching to an efficient showerhead will allow you to soap up with less water, which means you'll save water and reduce your bills.

Showering less
Every minute spent in the shower uses up to 17 liters of water. Set a timer on your phone to keep your showers short, sweet and water efficient. And if you wash dishes by hand, don't leave the water running to rinse. If you have two sinks, fill one with the rinse water. If you only have one sink, collect all your dishes in a drainer first, then rinse them quickly with a watering can or jar.

Tell your kids not to play with the hose and sprinklers.
Kids love to play under a hose or sprinkler on a hot day. Unfortunately, this practice wastes a lot of precious water and should be discouraged.

Conserve water. Save a million lives.
