Protocols on Biosafety

by Burton Dorley | 07-05-2014 19:33

Let us all help to protect our biodiversity from adverse effects of modern biotechnology.
For centuries, farmers have selected and saved the best seeds and animals to produce new varieties and breeds with improved qualities and yield using modern biotechnology techniques, scientist can insert, remove or modify genes in plants, animals and microorganisms to produce what are known as living modified organisms or LMOs.

LMOs, commonly known as genetically modified organisms

- GMOs , can be used for many things including food, feed and vaccines.

Modern biotechnology has great potential for improving human well being- for example, yielding crops or preventing diseases with modified vaccines.

However, LMOs could pose risks to biodiversity and human health, such as unintended harm to other organisms, allergens in food and antibiotic resistance.

For the concerns of the risks of LMOs governments adopted an international agreement in 2000 of January called the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Biological diversity. This Protocol protects biodiversity by ensuring that LMOs are handled, transported and used in a safe manner.

In October 2010 governments adopted a supplementary treaty to the Cartagena Protocol s on Biosafety known as the:

?span style="font-size: 7pt line-height: normal font-family: 'Times New Roman'">        Supplementary Protocol on liability and Redress

This Supplementary Protocol specifies response measures that need to be taken in the event of damage to biodiversity by LMOs.

This Protocol plays an important role in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

* Contact your government and seek information about LMOs in country and what is being done to ensure their safe use.
