Cacti in Mexico

One of the most representative plants are cacti in Mexico, appear within the most important emblem of our country, the national shield. They are a daily source of food for humans and animals, not only in Mexico but in other parts of the planet. 
They are used by some indigenous groups in their religious ceremonies and  considered world heritage.
Cacti  are the continent Americas, In Mexico it has an Approximate 48 genus and 563 species which makes it the largest variety in the world. 
  The Cactaceae family is more representative the arid areas and semiarid of Mexico and EE  U.U. The catus are perennials with fleshy stems and articulated, attached to a green rind. The rind allows little evaporation.
Most cacti have no leaves, except some genera as Pereskia and Preskiopsis with true leaves, and Opuntia  Whose seeds  produce cotyledons to the germinate.
Most part of the stem having  function of  water storing, as they are adapted to retain the ground moisture required in the future. 

Currently over half of Mexican cacti are at risk in the country, due to problems such as deforestation and habitat destruction, to open farmland,  construction of  houses, dams and roads phenomena   weather  and  the extraction of plants  for sale that remains  the leading cause of extinction of many species.

Because  are many risks of losing cacti in Mexico,is  created one norm that specify the environmental protection of native species of Mexico Flora and Fauna, we find risk categories and specifications for inclusion, exclusion or change, allowing conservation.
