No Impact Week (NIW) in My School!!!

by | 31-03-2014 20:44

My school, ISM, has launched a No Impact Week (NIW) last week from March 24 to March 28 to promote environmental awareness and sustainable wellbeing among students and faculty body. As what the name of this initiative suggests, the entire student body, including the Elementary School, Middle School, and High school students were asked to minimize their potential negative impacts toward the environment. Here are the brief theme descriptions of each day during the NIW.

Monday: "Well-being" Day- On this day, students were asked to laugh more and make other people and friends laugh more. It is a day when students were suggested to smile and compliment more towards each other to promote well-being among others. On this day, High School Freshmen students were distributing slices of pizza to their own grade level students, which was an effective way for students to feel more grateful and happier.

Tuesday: "Waste & Paper" Day- On this day, students were asked to segregate their trash and waste. Also, students were encouraged to recycle and reuse the waste that they have thrown away. In this way, students can become more efficient and live more sustainably. On this day, Environmental Council held a Recycling Art Competition, in which student participants were asked to build and construct a new art piece out of recycled materials.

Wednesday: "Transportation" Day- On this day, students were encouraged to do carpooling with their friends, thereby reduce the use of cars. Students were also suggested to ride school bus, bicycles or even walk to school. Students who walked to school were awarded with small treats, such as donuts or school utensils, by the Elementary School students.

Thursday: "Water" Day- Students and teachers were asked to reduce the use of water and save water. This theme was not only restricted within the school, but many students also took a great initiative to save water at their each respective home. For example, students who took 10 minutes of showering would reduce to 7 minutes of showering.

Friday: "Energy" Day- Students were asked to stop overcharging their computers. For example, if their laptops were already fully charged, then students were asked to unplug their laptop chargers in order to save energy. Also, students were highly recommended to turn off the electronic devices that were not in use. Some of the teachers and students took great initiatives to even turn off lights in classrooms and hallways. In order to promote the concept of saving energy, the Environmental Council, a group I am in part of, made a short video clip that presented many ways to save energy.

Although this initiative was launched and held for only one week, this initiative proved to be a very successful tool in cutting carbon footprints and our detrimental impacts toward the environment. Many students showed great efforts to live more sustainably by adhering to the themes and goals of each day during the NIW.

I highly encourage many different schools to also take this initiative. After all, small step makes a big difference.

Below is a  poster that incorporates the theme of each day during the No Impact Week and another poster that I found on website that also includes a short message to people globally:
