Earth Hour is an event turned movement for Mother Earth on 29th March from 8:30 and 9:30. It started as a lights off event in Sydney, Australia and soon spread to more than 7000 cities worldwide. It is organized by WWF. During this day people from all over the world turn off their lights for that one hour 8:30 to 9:30. Earth hour the world?s largest environmental action on climate change. In Dubai, Earth Hour was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa and Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque switched off their external lighting. In 2013, Dubai residents saved around 200,000 kWh by switching off their lights, which is roughly equivalent to 120,000 kg of carbon emissions. I took part in the Earth Hour Celebrations held at Al Majaz Waterfront. There was a wide range of activities held including Band Performances, Free T-shirt and Glow Bands distribution and using only candle lights. People from all walks of life including families, students etc. participated in it. Being one of the volunteers in the event, I helped in organizing and setting up the event. I distributed goodie bags to the children who came to attend the event. More than 20 Green Globe members have switched off their lights to show their support for the Earth Hour. I encourage everyone to participate in this worldwide movement and reduce their carbon footprint. You can even take this to the next step by observing an Earth Hour every day.
