Launch of UAE Green Festival @ DPS Sharjah-Tree Planting

by Rohan Kapur | 28-03-2014 04:42

Of late, my school DPS Sharjah enthusiastically launched the revered UAE Green Festival 2014 which is being held from 16th March to 16th April 2014 in our school on 24th March 2014 in accordance with a very fun filled and hearty tree plantation which was held before the launch of the prestigious event.

First as we gathered and the preparations of the plantation were in full progress, the chief guests arrived and I was chosen to represent the Eco-Committee of my school by taking an elaborate interview of our Chief Guest, Head of Sustainable development Sector in Green Buildings at JAFZA (Jabel Ali Free Zone Authority), Mr PR Jagannathan. An interesting interactive session with a highly qualified and intellectual man like Mr Jagannathan was helpful to know about his deeds and doings.

The morning kicked off with an amazing tree planting session. The chief guests and guests of honour were ably led by our Principal, Mrs Vandana Marwaha, into the greenhouse that is set up in the bus area of our school where organic farming is practiced and various crops such as mint, coriander, onion, strawberry, radish, carrot and various others are grown by using the natural fertilizers and manures that are obtained from the Tea Bag waste that comes from the staff room, disposed of by the teachers who drink tea. It is a good way to re-use the waste material whilst maintaining the divine practice of Organic Farming in our school.

We all, chief guests, guests of honour, principal, Environment Coordinator, Mrs Anjum Hasan and us Eco-Committee core members walked towards the greenhouse to carry out the tree planting. We all were given young tomato saplings to plant in the soil. First our chief gusts graced the occasion by planting the first crop of the season and then we followed in enthusiastic pursuit. By the time we left the organic farm, there had been 40 or so new tomato crops planted and our part to save out mother earth was carried out. All in all, it was a fruitful segment of the event as it was a new experience while we added to the rich variety of our Organic Farm.
