Water Resource Depletion

According to water.org, a child dies every 21 seconds due to water related diseases and illnesses. Around 545 million people do not have access to clean water in Southeast, East Asia and Oceania. Just looking from the statistics provided above, people around the world heavily depend on water, but they are not provided with adequate supply of water due to their low-income, geography constraints (where they live in), lack of government support etc. This is indeed a serious worldwide issue that needs to be considered. The big numbers suggest that this is not just a simple issue that should be overlooked upon, but rather it should be recognized by the entire people living on earth.

 

"Asia must increasingly consider and manage its scarce water, food and energy resources in a coordinated way to meet the growing needs of its population,"said Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Takehiko Nakao. Asian Development Bank references that out of "48 Asian member countries, led by China and India" 36 of them "have poor water security". Some of the countries face water crisis that can put energy security into peril.

 

As the main source of agriculture, water shortage leads to threat to food security. And also being part of power generation source, it leads to energy shortage at the cost of economic growth and people's quality of life. In particular, the shortage in clean water in many part of the world poses serious threat to people/s health and sometimes even life.

 

In the regard, policy makers should pay utmost attention to how to better manage and conserve the water resources. In the consumer side, all the individuals should also recognize that preventing waste of foods contributes to conservation of water as water is essential source of grain production. Strengthening this virtual cycle will not only enhance people's health condition but also quality of life by preserving wonderful sceneries based on clean water resources.

 

This water-food-environment nexus is crucial in improving people's welfare. Therefore, both policy makers, consumers, and all the individuals living on earth should make consorted efforts to increase food production, hydropower generation and water scenery resources by preserving and effectively managing scarce water resources.
