Do Not Honk

by | 27-02-2014 04:29

We are aware that around the world, drivers use horns for various purposes. In Singapore,as my father tells me, drivers do not generally use horns and would wait in the queue for a considerable time, with patience, and would not honk just to enquire what was going on ahead. It looks wonderful. But what I also found was that they would honk badly if some other vehicle broke some rules or put some driver in a tight spot. While it still saves a lot, we need to improve upon the situation. I would like to discuss the very need of horns in a vehicle, or rather, the need for a strong horn in a vehicle. I suppose if we were to use only "toot" in place of horns, we would be working for a better world. What we actually require at the most is a gentle kind of mild horns to draw attention if required at all.

In the state of Bihar, we have started the campaign to draw attention of the students and the public at large towards this issue. I have been acting with the SS Memorial Trust,Patna for enhancing awareness of the stakeholders on this issue. Some attractive banners and posters have been put out with the pictures of celebrities and known people who are appealing to people not to use horn at all. In this regard the support provided by Mr.Shideep Lande, an Indian Police Services officer who has been held by the young people in great esteem, has been going out to appeal publicly on this issue.

I did organise in some schools essay competitions on the need for and ways to avoid honking.

Some of the ear-catching slogans suggested in the competitions were -

1. Don?t honk, the electric poles do not listen.

2.Honking wakes up small children.

3.Why honking, people can see.

4.Why honking, people have got back-mirrors

5.Please do not honk- Gods are sleeping.
