  Coal has built this nation. Almost 60% of our electricity needs are met by coal. But over the last few years we have realised that coal is causing more harm than good. The environmental pollution and impacts on health and livelihoods is too high not to consider. The coal industry therefore has begun re branding itself through the idea of ?Clean Coal?. This is just old wine in a new bottle. The industry wants to make us believe that coal can magically become clean but there's just one problem with this scenario: Coal will never be clean! It is possible to make coal emissions cleaner. In fact, we've come a long way since the '70s in finding ways to reduce sulphurdioxide and nitrogen-oxide emissions, and more progress can be made. But the clean-coal sales pitch is that we can also bottle up the CO2 produced when coal is burned, most likely by burying it deep in the earth.
