Car Free Day (Dubai) 19-Feb-14 An Event & a thought

by Rohan Kapur | 10-02-2014 18:38

Event

Aiming at the reduction of carbon emissions and spreading awareness about global warming and methods of controlling, Fifth Car Free Day 2014 shall be observed on Wednesday, 19th February in Dubai.

Employees of participating companies will travel to their job locations using Public Transportation such as Metro, Buses & Abra (Sea Transport in Dubai).

This time 61 organisations & Dubai Municipality have geared up to organize this event. By this means they target to reduce 20 Tonns of Carbon emission keeping approx. 7,000 cars off roads by the participating entities.

From a modest beginning in 2010 where 1,000 vehicles participated reducing 4.2 Tonns of Carbon emission this is a good progress.

Thought

The Director-General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nassir Lootah, announced the above. The idea behind this initiative is to spread the culture of public transport which will help in reducing traffic congestion in Dubai as well.

He went on to suggest the concerned authorities to take all necessary steps to curb the increasing number of vehicles such as reducing the number of cars which can be owned by single owner, setting specific eligibility standards for vehicle ownership, increasing public transport facilities, and increasing the cost of parking and insurance, amongst others.

Keeping in mind the excellent usual response by the members from Dubai & Other Emirates I encourage all Dubai residents to make this event a success.

You may please share your experience at this platform.

I have posted it as an event in the events page as well.

Thanks for reading.
