Giving meaning to UAE Environment day-Recyclables from neighbourhood

by Arushi Madan | 07-02-2014 04:55

On 4th Feb , UAE Environment Day , I wanted to do something really big but due to my exams I couldn't do. But still in very simple way I tried to make it a meaningful day .

I visited my neighbourhood cafetarias , supermarkets and restaurants and shared with them the harmful effects of just discarding paper /plastics/can  and requested them to collect these for me . First they had their concerns like where would they keep them , it would occupy space and it is hassle etc but when I explained them that if they carelessly throw them in general bin , then these would add to landfill which is a cause of global warming which is further causing climate change , spread of diseases , increased intensity and probability of droughts /floods/hurricanes , melting of polar ice cap and other unexpected happenings including the damage to economy. They seem to have understood it and infact in one restaurant their manager came and appreciated that a teenager is coming and giving these wise talks to them which made sense to him. He instructed his staff to collect plastic bottles, paper , can for me . Later I went and collected from these places about 100 plastic bottles , around 50 kg papers and 200 cans.

Today I went and put these cans and plastics into Reverse vending machine of Bee'ah(Sharjah's environment and waste management company). For papers , I would go tomorrow to EEG to submit these.

I am satisfied that at least something I did for environment on the National Environment Day.
