We the students of B.Sc. Environment Management went to field to Godavari for the systematic study of different plant species and collection of plant for herbarium preparation. Herbarium: It is the collection of dried pressed plants over a long period of time mounted on sheet, which provides detail data label. A well prepared herbarium specimen when looked after properly remains in good condition for along time. In addition, an herbarium may specialize in particular groups of plants (such as palms) or plants from a specific geographic region. Herbaria range in size from small personal collections to massive ones such as at the Godawari Botanical Garden with more than 5.3 million specimens. Study Area Godavari is located approximately ten kilometers from both Patan and Kathmandu, its geographical coordinates are: Area Type: Populated place Location Type: Populated Place Latitude: 27.6 Longitude: 85.4 Latitude (DMS): 27?36' 0 N Longitude (DMS): 85?24' 0 E And the range of height is from 1,455 m to 2,765 m.
The academic field work primary focus on collection of plant for their systematic study, supplemented by relevant secondary information?s available in various forms such as (articles, reports, books, internet etc). The forest areas were visited, along with Dr. Kunjani Joshi, Prof Dr. Aananda Raj Joshi and Arjun Karki. During the study, some of the plant species along with their appropriate information was collected identification of unidentified plant was verified by visiting botanical garden of godawari. Focus was made on group discussion with key people of the study area along the semi structure questionnaires. Discussion was made between students, teachers, and people involved in the area. During the discussion, emphasis was given on relevant information such as plant name (Latin and local names), ethno botanical information, local commercial status, existing conservation practices, there economic value etc.
Secondary, our activity was also concerned to compile information source/access by preparing the herbarium of the plant collected. The prepared herbarium was stored in environmental monitoring laboratory of SchEMS. The herbarium was prepared by changing news papers regularly with very care so that the plant can be preserved finely for long term.
Hence, From godavari area we have collected different specimens of plants for their identification, classification, and nomenclature, prepared their herbarium by pressing in newspaper for 3 weeks every day. Form observation of their leaves stem structure, root system it made us easy to classify them by consulting with teachers and the books of different authors. We gain the practical knowledge about the species of Godavari. We observe natural vegetation and biodiversity in the same place of different species. And learn to preserve the plant specimen by preparing their herbarium, which is the source of reference for scientific and academic studies for future. The scientific name , Nepali name, family, genus, species, that we have collected from godavari are listed below:
