3 main environmental challenges in Vietnam

by | 31-01-2014 16:51

There are 3 main environmental challenges in Vietnam: technology, awareness and networking.

Networking is the most important problem that we need to solve. It is lack of the connections and exchange among environmental organizations and projects in Vietnam. It is a big limitation as they could not know what others are doing, they do not have a good overview about the environmental activities so that not support each other, share the resources and do better. Besides that it is also the problem about connection between different majors. Young people in Vietnam have a thinking that environment is social issues. And, raising awareness is the only thing we can do for the environment. But, it is not true. Every major should be involved in environmental issues together and have the exchange: entrepreneurs, policies makers or scientists. They approach it in different aspects, provide different ways to solve problems.

Awareness is the next important problems. In Vietnam, environmental issues are just cared recently. It is still a new topic in Vietnam that people are not familiar with reduce-reuse-recycle, they do not know about the danger of climate change. Citizens, companies and the government are not aware of sustainable development and its importance.

Lastly, it is technology. Vietnam is a developing country. It will be a long journey to develop infrastructure and technology to protect the environment more effective. For example, we do not have a good system to recycle. The number of experts in environmental sciences is also limited.

Most of activists in my country are the youth. They have a great enthusiasm and motivation to work for a better community. They have great ideas and ability to turn these ideas into real projects.

I think the big change can start from the change in a small group. And, young people are great change agents in community. They move first as an example then they inspire and share experience with other people in the society how to make a change.

In global level, young people from different country can exchange their ideas and work together in regional projects as they have an open-mind and a good ability in accessing to the Internet.

However, the youth do not have many chances to raise their voice. They should be provided more places to tell their opinions and discuss with policies makers, entrepreneurs? It means that it is not only events for the youth but cross-generations event and forum with both young and not-young-people.
