by | 28-01-2014 02:38

My university is in Jogjakarta city, Indonesia. People awareness in Jogjakarta about green life style is increased. Here, I wanna to share a little bit about Sego Segawe movement.

Cycling is now not only be hobby, but it is a life style for some communities in the city. Pollution levels, global warming and traffic jam made urban people looking for a variety of transportation alternatives, one of it is the bike . Bike is not produce carbon monoxide gas and carbon dioxide , does not pollute the air and the environment and does not cause traffic jam. This is because the bike operated by the muscles of the human body , then fuel consumption is not necessary such as gasoline or diesel.

Responding to a phenomenon that occurs, some major cities including the city of Jogjakarta start to promote cycling activities. SEGO SEGAWE is one of cycling activities that promoted by Jogjakarta government. It is abbreviation from Javanese ?sepeda kanggo sekolah lan nyambut gawe?, which means bike to school and work.

Substantially in the short term, this program is a movement to inspire people who live in Yogyakarta to use bicycles as an alternative mode of transport especially at close range ( 3km - 5km ) . In the long-term, this program expected to be a movement what will have implications for the decline of motorcycle using. So, it?ll reduce the air pollution, create the efficiency of energy, improve degree of human health and the environment and so on.

To support this movement, Jogjakarta government provide the facilities. Bike lane is one of example of the facilities. Actually, I think not only in Jogjakarta where has the program like this. But the important thing is it needs our support as young generation through our participation for it sustains.
