![]() ![]() Jeepneys are a common form of public transportation in the Philippines. It is an elongated version of the American jeep that was used during the World War. It is made mostly of stainless steel. The owner has it painted with colorful designs so no jeepney is ever alike. The problem with jeepneys is the pollution. All jeepneys run on diesel fuel and most have dark grey exhaust that is a sign of pollution. The drivers usually don't even own the jeepney so most of the time they don't really care about maintaining it well so it does contribute to air pollution. I watched on television an interview for what they call the COMET (City Optimized Managed Electric Transport). This is an e-jeepney that is powered by electricity and so it has zero emission and is environmentally friendly. It uses lithium iron phosphate batteries that can travel up to 100 kilometers until it has to be charged again. A group in Makati City, Philippines wants to replace the traditional diesel jeepney to help protect the environment. So they ordered 2,000 e-jeepneys and the members of their organization can bring their old jeepney and it will be replaced with an e-jeepney. Instead of coins, the e-jeepney uses a pass for payment. It is also comfortable and safe. The e-jeepney's maximum speed is 60 km/hr. which is perfect for city driving. |
