Plastic and Us

by | 26-01-2014 12:42

Plastic: This material is probably one of the most common materials we see everywhere. From grocery stores to fast-food chains and to the streets, plastic is present. We use it in our houses, in school, in work, and so on. This thing is very common that the absence of such is unimaginable in our present world. We are so used to it that we nearly forget that it is non-biodegradable.

Yes, it is non-biodegradable. Most of the plastics we have are made from petrochemicals and do not decompose. Imagine when all of us throw plastic anywhere? Improper disposition of plastic causes serious environmental problem. (Read - Plastic: A Blessing or A Curse?)

Obvious effect of improper disposal is that plastic becomes an eyesore. It makes the area unclean and unhygienic. In other words: ugly. Scattered plastics along the streets are the last things we want to see.

When it rains, the plastics which are in the streets and canals may block the drainage system. This prevents the flow of the water, makes the streets flooded and may help spread water-borne diseases. Cleaning up the street after, maintaining the drainage system or going to a hospital will somehow affect us financially.

As a student, we can help by not throwing garbage anywhere. Let?s throw it in the proper place. We can also raise awareness by telling our friends to do the same. We can write letters to our government officials when we see non-compliance of business establishments to the existing sanitary laws of community.

We must be active in helping our community become clean and sustainable. After all, we will face the consequences of our actions. Let?s act now and start the change.
