On 07-Jan-14 Sharjah Municipality has launched SMS parking system. Earlier public has to take a paper ticket from parking meter & place on the dashboard of their cars. On an average 1-2 tickets are taken by everybody. Normally after the parking period is over, the ticket is just thrown away. End of the day it generated so mush of waste.

Now all that can be avoided by using SMS service from mobiles. By sending an SMS the parking can be secured. Moreover, a Motorists will get a reminder SMS 10 minutes before the expiry of the time of ticket. Thus, Parking period can also be extended by using mobiles.

This is a positive step taken by Sharjah municipality. It is moving towards its goal set at 2015 for Landfill free Sharjah. One action leads to the other. Drops make an ocean. This is a very positive step towards sustainable city.

For the records, Dubai has this service since past 4 years. And it has most number of cars in entire UAE. Sharjah is the second city to have introduced this service
