[December Free Report] Chameleons

by Seoyoon Min | 27-12-2022 22:33

I watched a video of a chameleon being born and it was very interesting that instead of breaking eggs and hatching like other reptiles, the mother gives birth to her young like mammals. And after getting to know this fun fact, I researched more about them. Chameleons are born dark but they start to change their body colors starting from 1. Scientists assume that they change colors by raising or lowering their body temperature to match the ambient temperature an light exposure, to communicate with colleagues, or to express one's feelings. Along with the transition of the size of the pigments, the process of color transition is gone through by stretching or pulling the skin, changing the very fine structure beneath the skin and changing the distance through which light passes. Most chameleons live in trees in dense forests, and their feet have changed to suit their habits. Most lizards have five toes on all fours, while chameleons have three or two toes each. The shape of these toes makes it very useful for grasping and moving branches. Like this, it is interesting how chameleons are incredibly adaptive to their environment. Next time I wish to study more about species that have also evolved to match their surroundings.
