Monsato Seeds and Nepal

The hybrid Monsato seeds has been creating buzz in Nepali agricultural market recently. It is a hybrid seed produced by Mosanto Agricultural bio-technology Company of USA, which is famous for making hybrid seeds. It has both pros and cons. But in my opinion it has more cons.

It's disadvantages are

Hybrid seeds cannot be reused. This means farmers cannot keep the fruit and use it as seed the next year

Farmers who use hybrid seeds will have to purchase another lot of seeds for the next plantation season 

Inability to generate their own seeds will make the farmers dependent on suppliers, mostly foreigners

Although it has disadvantages it has some advantages too.

 Hybrid seeds give better yields and can withstand drought conditions. This will ultimately help the government to improve food security situation.

Recently one private company of Nepal tried to import its seed in Nepal and there was counter arguments and debate all over the Nepal especially among the agricultural exports. Social media was heavily involved. Different programs and rallies were held in order to discourage its import. Seeing its long term disadvantages the people are trying to discourage it.

Now the private company have stopped importing those seeds and is collaborating with other country to produce hybrid seeds in our own country in order to discourage dependency of seed on other countries.
