Three-year campaign launched to conserve energy in UAE

by Arushi Madan | 13-12-2013 03:27

The UAE has the highest global energy consumption rate per capita.

Mosques are among the highest consumers of energy in the UAE, contributing to the country having the highest energy consumption rate per capita in the world at 20-30 kilowatt hours per day . The global average is 7-15 kilowatt hours per day.

It is reported  that  mosques waste the most amount of energy because even though people pray five times a day, the lights and air conditioners are running on throughout the whole day. Worshippers also have to be educated because they turn the taps on to the maximum [volume] instead of rationing it. To achieve this Fewa  today  launched its energy conservation campaign that will run till 2016. This campaign will target children in schools, housewives, government and private organisations, and mosques.

Fewa supplies electricity and water to  4 emirates of UAE viz. Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and the cities of the East Coast.

The UAE's water consumption per capita is 550 litres per day, which is also higher than the global average of 170-300 litres per day.

Throughout the campaign, Fewa intends to develop a culture of conservation, build best practices, and spread awareness between various sections of the community.

The United Nations Development Programme recently announced that Arab countries may need to invest more than $US 200 (Dh730) billion in the next 10 years to secure water resources.

By January 1, 2014, Fewa intends to raise the tariff of water and electricity by 15 per cent as part of its efforts in reducing energy consumption. Slap method will be used for tariffs so users will be charged higher for the more energy used. This will be a way to encourage users to use energy judiciously.

To reduce energy consumption among Emiratis, the federal government aims to change the mindset and culture of families though its three-year campaign, which includes involving students in seminars and inviting them to visit desalination plants so they can get a first-hand look on how difficult it is to extract a drop of water.

Concept and culture of conservation is not limited to consumption reduction , but is about optimal consumption that smart practices are adopted to help reduce wastage and stop needless waste and costs.

Other 2 emirates Dubai and Abu Dhabi already have a similar campaign and  FEWA is  supporting those initiatives. These campaigns aim to change the culture of energy consumption and have it reduced, as we do not want to add more greenhouse gases that harm the environment.
