Diabetes is a condition that occurs as a result of problems with the production and supply of insulin in the body. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, a form of sugar that we use as a source of energy to provide power for our muscles and other tissues. In order for our muscles and other tissues to absorb glucose from our blood, we need a hormone called insulin. People with diabetes cannot use enough of the glucose in the food they eat. This leads to an increase in the amount of glucose in the blood. This high level of glucose or "high blood sugar" is called hyperglycaemia. High levels of glucose in the blood can lead to serious complications.
Every 4th person suffers from Diabetes. To create awareness and Beat Diabetes I and other Green Globe members took part in the "Beat Diabetes" walkathon organized by Landmark Group. The walkathon took place on 6th December, 2013. It was attended by more than 20,000. The main cause of this event was to raise awareness on how important is walking in combating Diabetes. The event had an energetic start. Free T-shirts and caps were given to everyone. Also refreshments like snack bars, water etc. was given. There were even free Glucose checks for everyone. The event was a memorable one. I advice every to follow this example and have at least a 20 min walk everyday to live a healthy and disease free life. |
