4th Greeneration Summit: A Gathering for Youth Empowerment on Climate Change

by Bam Azores | 27-11-2013 21:51

The 2013 Greeneration Summit: A Gathering for Youth Empowerment on Climate Change was held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Philippines on November 25, 2013. This was organized by the Climate Change Commission.

There were about 1000 youth from all over the country.  We were lucky to be invited and be part of this Summit. We had a big group composed of students from 15 private and public schools in San Pablo City. We learned about climate change and how to make ourselves and other youth aware about the environment.

We listened to speakers the whole day.  Our first speaker was the head of the Climate Change Commission, Secretary Lucille Sering who explained to us about Climate Change and what the Commission does. We also had the Celebrity Ambassador, Bianca Gonzales give us tips about 10 eco-friendly things we can all do like saying No to Plastics and carpooling.    Another speaker was Mayor Pie Alvarez who talked about the Eco-Town Framework and how her town can be ecologically stable and economically resilient. Then we met the group from South Korea (Global Green Growth Institute) that is helping Mayor Pie with the Eco-Town project.

We were proud of one speaker who is from our City. He is Dr. Rodel Lasco and he talked about the Philippine Climate Change Assessment team.  Dr. Lasco is one of the co-winners of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for Climate Change together with Vice President Al Gore.  Another interesting speaker was Miss Maria Ressa who is the founder of Rappler. This is like an online news with the information being contributed by the citizens. She talked about how we can become Digital Humanitarians which is using social media to help during natural calamities like Typhoon Haiyan.

We learned so much about Climate Change and what we can do for Adaptation and Mitigation.  This was a great green summit for future generations perfectly named Greeneration Summit.
