PROVISION OF A PROPER DISPOSAL SYSTEM IN FREETOWN

by | 23-11-2013 06:41

November has been declared as a month of campaign against filth and debris in Schools. The issue of Filth is one that cannot be undermined or down played because it is the underpinning factor for the spread of diseases and other social problems. Garbage collection isn?t just the problem but how can we properly dispose of the various Filth and Debris that has been accumulated in the system. There is only one disposal site in Freetown called Bomeh which has been the disposal point for quite a long period of time. This site is almost full and the garbage is not divided into recyclables and non-recyclables. Taking an Instance from the Land Material for School Kit made available by Tunza Eco-Generation team, we do not have a mechanism that is bent on doing Plastic Recycling, Glass Recycling, Steel Recycling, Paper Recycling, Aluminum Recycling and Electronic Recycling. It has been affirmed there is no waste as almost all of the items that we are disposing of at the end of the day, could be used back into the system.

This is a cause for concern as our people are being hunted by the constant proliferation of waste and garbage all around. Due to acute poverty some people have lived in this area since childhood and have been infected by diseases and infections. This area is believed to be rich and useful for the production of cooking gas that is now a leading trend in our country. The question that is still being asked is how we can adequately utilize the use of these wastes for a better option for the entire populace.

Our progress as a nation cannot be swifter if we fail to provide a better solution to refuse disposal. We cannot sit back and allow our communities and environments to become flooded by huge piles of debris and garbage lest we allow it to overcome our generation. If posterity should judge us, let it judge us on the bright side of life. We have a responsibility to mother earth and proper disposal facility could be a step in the right direction.
