  THE STUDENTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVE The students for the environment initiative is an initiative created by me in collaboration with a couple of friends from my department, the department of geography and environmental management, university of Ilorin. Though the initiative itself is still a work in progress, we intend to commence our activities in the university campus and the surrounding communities at the start of the new school session beginning from the third week of October this year. The creation of this initiative was brought about after along thought about the need as a student of environmental management to create a strong voice for the environment mainly on campus and the surrounding communities and to practically exercise what we are acquiring in the lecture room, laboratories and also on our departmental field works. As we are all aware about the fact that localized environmental issues are increasingly becoming global, I see it as a challenge to try sensitize and create awareness about our responsibilities to the environment and the menace being faced by our immediate environment within the school campus, its host communities and the society at large. I hope to achieve this in collaboration with colleagues who have shown interest and also more and more people as we move on. The objective of the initiative will include organizing symposiums and other related programmes to educate fellow students on the need to care for the environment. For instance, by adopting proper waste management strategies and the need to make the university campus clean and green, then to possibly extend to surrounding communities. Also to instil the culture of conservatism among fellow students in areas such as wastage of water, the need to conserve power and prevention of indiscriminate cutting of trees within the school campus and most importantly to help in the creation of an environmentally conscious minds out there in the society. In conclusion, aside from working together with fellow students, I intend to involve our lecturers and various relevant heads of departments. Also, there is a plan to create a website primarily to promote this initiative in other university campuses in the country and to the society at large. As I have said earlier that the initiative is a work in progress, meaning that it will require a great deal of hard work and commitment from those of us involved. I hope to achieve the stated objectives and many more and to help create a sustainable environment for us all. |
