Introduction to soil health

by | 19-10-2013 13:34

I have given awareness among our village people and farmers about soil health on 16th of this month, the same project was showcased by me in GSY, M alaysia.  For healthy people we need healthy food.  Healthy food is obtained only from the healthy soil without any artificial matters.  So I have to start my speech about what is soil and so on.  Al are observed keenly and told me that they follow  only organic farming.  I give here as a paper what I talked in the camp. I start introduction as ?Healthy soil is essential for the production of crops used to feed humans and livestock.  Soil stores water and nutrients required for plant growth and it gives a stable base to support plant roots. This valuable natural resource is damaged by industrial agriculture practices.  Monocrop agriculture systems and intensive ploughing cause nutrient depletion and soil erosion.  Over application of fertilizers and pesticides has contaminated our soils and waterways. Using  sustainable agricultural techniques such as conservation tillage, crop rotation, and organic fertilization protect our valuable soil resources. Agroforestry system in agriculture fields also retain the strength of soil in agricultural fields.? I end my introduction with the quote,

?A nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.? - Franklin D. Roosevelt
