Today 16^th. Oct 2013 is the world Food day  and  this year UN and  FAO are  focusing on development   of  ?healthy food system?.  A healthy food system is one in  which all residents have access to, and can afford to buy, safe, nutritious, and culturally-acceptable food that has been produced in an environmentally sustainable way and that sustains our rural communities.

When we tried to  learn more on it . We came to know that, UN & FAO   have organized World Food Day poster design contest .  Here are some frequently asked questions .

Q. What are food systems? 

Any process that involves the production and consumption of food is a part of a food system. This includes planting, harvesting, processing, packaging, transport, marketing, purchasing, storing and eating. Jobs, money, electricity and nutrition are also parts of the system.

Q. Why are we focusing on sustainable food systems?

Total world population is expected to hit 9 billion by 2050. To make sure everyone has enough to eat, we will need to rethink our food systems. We want to reduce the impact of food systems on the natural environment, because food production today produces a lot of greenhouse gases, puts a strain on water supplies, and creates a threat to biodiversity.  We need to understand better how food shopping choices affect poor farmers in other parts of the world. And we will need to learn how to waste less food – in transport, in storage, in supermarkets, and at home.

Q. How many people are going hungry?

Latest FAO estimates show that about 870 million people worldwide live in a state of daily hunger. The good news is that many people and organizations and governments are now energized by the goal of ending hunger in our lifetime.
