AFFORESTATION- THE KEY TO AN EVERGREEN LIFESTYLE

by | 09-10-2013 21:26

Since becoming an eco-generation ambassador for Sierra Leone, I have been looking for an opportunity in which I can preach the ever green ecosystem for Sierra Leone and the world at large. Afforestation could be expressed as the allowance of trees to grow in the ecosystem. The whole world needs a lot of trees for the correct inflow of air and oxygen. Recently, I was walking along the Lumley beach area, when I came in contact with some trees that have been allowed to grow in a land. At first, it may seem unsightly and very much unkempt but on second thought I pondered on the following questions: How many people in the world can really have enough of fresh air in their Homes and dwelling houses? Have humanity underestimated the vital contribution that trees provide to us? Can we allow the air conditioners to replace our natural source of respiration?

Our progress as a generation cannot be swifter than our progress in environmental safety. When we encourage rewarding safety measures in the various communities, we will be able to lead a better lifestyle. Some of the benefits of Afforestation include a rich soil for agricultural purposes, a natural habitat for birds a constant and reliable source of air etc. taking a critical look at the agricultural benefit, Afforestation allows the soil to regain its natural nutrients needed for proper and fresh fruits and other products. In Sierra Leone, our practice has been to burn a wild fire in the bushy areas which tend to burn away some of the natural nutrients needed by the plants. Also, when there is a heavy downpour of rain, the top soil is washed away when there is the absence of trees which will make it quite difficult for agriculture.

In line with that, the planting of trees to enhance Afforestation promotes healthy living. From the photograph below, a community that has such an area like that will have many health benefits to the inhabitants. This is as a result of the fact it will help reduce erosion in the area which will lead to flooding in the streets. In recent times, we have experienced many flooding in the streets which is a clear indication that more trees should be planted to prevent such a pandemic.

As an ambassador, I will work some environmental protection agencies to ensure that we promote Afforestation. This will work along with my campaign against filth in Freetown as deforestation is one of the sources of filth and debris in the ecosystem. The world needs some proactive measures to conquer and tackle some of the environmental issues that we are faced with. If we die and leave a generation the same way that we met them, then we are a minus to such a generation therefore let us add value, stimulus and impetus to this campaign which will expedite an ever green lifestyle for all and sundry.
