We always hear about the future impacts that may happen in our countries if we don't take care of the environment. However, there are countries that are real life example of the extreme effects of deforestation like Haiti.

Haiti is one country that experienced this before environmental activism emerged. Today, with most of their land gone, they suffer terribly!

Deforestation in Haiti started in the early days of Slavery. It was colonized by the French who cut down trees of export and the enslaved locals cut trees for firewood. With money being the main incentive for the french, the land was thoroughly exploited. The french not stopping at anything and the locals butting trees to sustain themselves, after some time, the forests were clear-cut!

The clear cut forests made the land more susceptible to erosion. With almost all the trees cut, their roots die and no no longer anchor the soil with the heavy tropical rains of Haiti. Also, Haiti has been hit with Hurricanes oftenly which often blows away the top layer of the soil.

Since there is no vegetation on land, when it rains, nutrients in the soil or nitrates in the water quickly runs down the mountainous terrain and they cannot be absorbed by plants. The nutrients then enter water bodies which causes leaching and affects the corals.

The soil cannot absorb a lot of water because the water rushes down the bare mountainside quickly. In cases where the speed of rainfall is slower, it causes the over-saturation of the soil which can cause mudslides destroying villages.

Haiti has been hard-stuck with environmental issues! It needs help!
